HistoryRestorationGalleryHow to HelpGarden District Neighborhood Alliance

Georgia Tucker Elementary School is in dire need of an occupant to enable it to remain a landmark in the garden district of Monroe.  School boards across the country are faced with this dilemma every year when dealing with older school buildings.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has added neighborhood schools to its annual 11 Most Endangered Historic Places list.  The list was created to alert the public to various threats to these irreplaceable community landmarks.

Georgia Tucker was built in an era when schools were the glue of the neighborhoods and community.  Because of the care and dedication in design and construction of these buildings like Georgia Tucker, they still remain a landmark to many.  New school construction generally resembles large boxes and may have a life-span of only 30 to 50 years.  Older school buildings were created with longevity in mind.  Georgia Tucker can be here for another century with a little care taken now because it was built with pride and still encourages it from the community.

The key idea to remember is that Georgia Tucker was a cherished school.  And although its time as a school has past, it still carries many wonderful aspects that will benefit many future organizations through the success of our renovation efforts.
